She Kills Monsters
A comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games, She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90s pop culture, acclaimed young playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.
LA Mission College Theatre is seeking actors, designers, and production crew to bring the fantastical world of She Kills Monsters to life. Auditions for actors and interviews for all technical and design positions will be held in the second week of the spring semester. No prior theatre experience is necessary.
This production will feature video projection, puppetry, and lots of fight choreography.
If you are interested in participating in any area of the production, please follow this link and fill out the form.
Audition info for actors
You must fill out the form above in order to audition.
Preliminary auditions for She Kills Monsters will be held from 3:00-6:00 pm on Tuesday, February 18 and Wednesday, February 19 from 9:00-11:00am in the AMP Theater. There will be a sign-up sheet at the front desk in the lobby with 10-minute slots.
Callbacks will be held on Friday, February 21 from 9:30-12:00.
In order to audition, you must select a role to audition for and prepare the corresponding scene (or 'side') below. There are sides for all of the major characters.
One of the most important things that we look for in actors is preparation, beginning with the audition. To prepare well for an audition requires learning the lines and physical actions in the side and then performing them. You will have a 'reader' in the audition with whom you will perform the scene.
As this play requires a lot of physical action, you should be dressed and prepared to move in the audition.
If you are interested in being a Puppeteer, please prepare a role as outlined above.
Please bring a headshot and an acting resume with you. The headshot doesn't need to be professional; we just need a picture of you. Even if you have little or no experience, please prepare a resume.
Rehearsals begin the week of February 24.
If you are cast in the show, there will be a mandatory meeting at 10:00 am on Friday, February 28 in which you will be added to the Rehearsals and Performances course.
Tilly — a lesbian tomboy and fantasy fanatic; nerdy, sarcastic, occasionally bullied; appears from beyond the grave to her sister, Agnes, and leads her through the journey of the play
Agnes — Tilly’s older sister, average and initially clueless to nerd culture. Through Tilly's help, she learns to embrace her inner badass and let her geek flag fly .
Lilith — popular girl next door by day, heroic and bloodthirsty Demon Queen by night. Described as “the perfect combination of beauty and brawn.” Tilly’s in-game girlfriend.
Kaliope — an athletic Dark Elf, master tracker, lock-picker, intelligent and above emotions, collected, older soul
Orcus — Overlord of the Underworld, a lazy demon who has given up defending his treasure in favor of watching Friends and snacking
Chuck — nerd with a grunge sensibility, runs a comic book store. As Dungeon Master he goes by "DM Biggs." Considers himself a ladies man.
Miles — Average and occasionally confused. Has a temper. Agnes’ “long-term” boyfriend but hasn’t made the big leap. Also plays a mean gelatinous cube.
Vera — Agnes’s friend at the high school. Foul mouthed and short tempered. She's not very good at her job as a guidance counselor.
Evil Gabbi & Tina — evil bully succubi winged cheerleaders with fangs. When at school, the same, minus the wings. Dance experience a plus.
Farrah — faerie that lives in a forest; petite and homicidal.
Some of the following roles may be doubled, depending on the number of auditioners:
Narrator — Lord of the Rings style hooded figure
Steve — a nerdy adventurer who gets killed over and over in increasingly violent and humorous ways.
