Before the Deluge
I first read this book when I was on tour in Berlin in the late 1990s. Revisiting it now, with all that is happening in the world, it was starting to see this time and place that seemed so removed is actually very present in the United States today.
Friedrich goes year-by-year through the 1920s, focusing on the politicians and artists who were responding to the rise of Fascism. The first few chapters can be dry, as it's easy to get lost in the political landscape of that era, but once he gets into talking about people like Brecht, Dietrich, Grosz, and so many others, it's a total page turner.
