ABOUT THE SHOW
In 1949, the federal government passed the National Housing Act, which allocated funds for the building of public housing across America. The City of Los Angeles targeted the predominantly Mexican-American community in Chavez Ravine, declaring the quaint enclave a slum and offering buyouts in exchange for the promise of vouchers for new low income apartments. Some took the buyout, others refused to leave. Homes were leveled, the housing plan fell through, and, lo and behold, the Brooklyn Dodgers were looking for a new West Coast home. When the remaining residents refused to leave, Los Angeles claimed eminent domain, dragged them from their homes, and leveled the ravine to make way for Dodger Stadium. In thrilling documentary style, Chavez Ravine tells this story, featuring dozens of real-life local characters including Vin Scully, Fernando Valenzuela, former Mayor Norris Poulson, Walter O’Malley, and Abbot and Costello.
